Buckaroos Round Up the Herd
The life of the buckaroo has changed a
lot over the years, but the main focus is still the cattle. The basic buckaroo
skills include riding, using a rope correctly, baling hay during the summer, and
mending fences. One of the main tasks of the buckaroo is the roundup--locating
the cattle on the range and driving them back to the ranch. What sorts of
techniques do you think the buckaroos use to roundup the cattle? Buckaroos use a
lot of different techniques to move and keep track of cows. To drive cattle from
a thicket of dense brush, buckaroos may stand alongside them making
noise--banging on a tin can or shaking a can full of stones. Buckaroos need to
be careful when doing this, because it may frighten the cows and cause a
stampede. Another way buckaroos move cattle is to ride down a hill, moving the
cows along with them. Another method is to use the "bell mare," a horse that
wears a bell to keep the other horses together. Buckaroos have to pay attention
to a lot of things as they round up the cattle. They have to keep the cows
moving along without injury and reunite calves with their mothers when they get
separated. The essential skill needed by a buckaroo is "judgment." Good judgment
leads to another important trait, the ability to be at "the right place at the
right time" when riding and working. A good cowhand or buckaroo needs to be
alert at all times, as the task of leading a herd back to the ranch can be a
tricky one.
